James J Millichamp BA(Hons), MA Fine Art

I produce prints, photographs and drawings based on daily life in the twenty first century.  By presenting the incidental or mundane I aim to engage the viewer:  allowing them to recognise aspects of their own experience, exploring the relationships between seemingly banal memories, there signifignance and shared experiences.  I have presented this work in an intentionally minimal way,  forcing a contradictory juxtaposition of personal imagery expressed through impersonal forms of communication.  I want to avoid and delete from the work any sentimentallity or atmosphere and this hopefully allows the viewer to connect with the object being described and their own associations with it,  rather than a suggested narrative based on artistic expression.  I often employ fine art techniques to present ideas and am also interested in exploring conceptual issues of communication through my work.  Recently I designed a project based, on part, on my experience of teaching art at secondary level.  I completed an A level qualification in Art and Design.  The subsequent presentation of school quality artwork formed alongside the accompanying research, a critique of the exam culture in which we operate in twenty first century Britain.  When displayed as part of my master's final show this project was highly commended by my tutors and by the external moderator David Rayson.
